August 24, 2008 Why Worship in Dance? In Psalms 150:4, the psalmist exhorts the people of God to “praise [God] with tambourine and dance; praise [God] with strings and pipe!” Jesus quoted the Old Testament psalms on several occasions, so I think it’s safe to assume that he endorsed them. In Ecclesiastes 3:4, Solomon said concerning life that there is “a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.” While this scripture doesn’t clarify the setting or situation for dancing, it certainly doesn’t dismiss it out of hand. In Jeremiah 3:14, prophesying returning favor on his people, the Lord through the prophet Jeremiah said, “Again I will build you, and you shall be built, O virgin Israel! Again you shall adorn yourself with tambourines and shall go forth in the dance of the merrymakers” and again in Jeremiah 31:13, “Then shall the young women rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old shall be merry. I will turn their mourning into joy; I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow.” It is clear from these scriptures that dancing is a good thing. Instead of being troubled, Israel was going to be restored and would dance. When done reverently and worshipfully, dance is a beautiful expression of praise to our Father. |
